Forest School Level 3 (AIM Accredited) – Overview

The Level 3 Forest School Leader qualification is designed for individuals who want to plan, lead, and manage Forest School programs. It is accredited by AIM Qualifications and Assessment Group, making it a recognised certification in outdoor education.


Course Overview

  • This qualification enables participants to run their own Forest School sessions independently.
  • It covers theory, practical skills, risk management, and leadership. the course includes a combination of training days, practical assessments, coursework, and a portfolio.
  • It is suitable for teachers, early years practitioners, outdoor educators, and anyone wanting to work in outdoor learning.

Aims of the Course

Understand Forest School principles and how they support holistic development.
Develop leadership skills to plan and deliver Forest School programs.
Learn risk management for outdoor activities, including fire, tool use, and natural hazards.
Gain practical outdoor skills, including shelter building, tool use, and natural crafts.
Support learners’ development through child-centered, play-based learning.
Promote sustainability and environmental awareness in outdoor settings.


Course Structure

1️⃣ Theory & Training Days – Face-to-face or online learning covering child development, risk management, and leadership.
2️⃣ Practical Skills Assessment – Fire lighting, tool use, and outdoor activities.
3️⃣ Portfolio Completion – Evidence of learning, lesson plans, and reflective practice.
4️⃣ Running a Forest School Programme – Participants must plan and lead a minimum of six sessions in a natural setting.


Accreditation & Certification

  • AIM Qualifications & Assessment Group accredits this Level 3 certificate.
  • It is a nationally recognized qualification in the UK.
  • Allows participants to work as independent Forest School Leaders in schools, nurseries, outdoor education centres, and community projects.
